The Exercise: If you are left of center politically, identify someone you know who is to the left of you politically and talk to them about these issues. Discuss your answers to the questions on the Test Results page, as well as the principle of polar interdependence, and explain why the most mature and effective progressives are those who can recognize and incorporate some of the wisdom of the Right into their positions.
While you might expect a depolarization exercise to ask you to communicate with someone from the other side of the divide, the principles of polar interdependence suggest that each side needs to start by depolarizing itself, which is the aim of this exercise.
If the person you communicate with shows an interest in this new way of thinking, you might also point them to ICE’s polarization test and whitepaper to learn more. Finally, please consider describing your experience of this communication exercise on ICE’s Facebook page or in the comments section of the Polarization Test’s first page.
The Principles Behind the Exercise: As discussed in our Depolarization whitepaper, overcoming political polarization begins by recognizing that each pole needs the enduring values of its opposing pole for the full realization of its own position. Applied to politics, this principle shows how conservative values can serve to improve liberal positions by challenging and moderating such positions in a way that makes them stronger. The same can be said about the role of liberal values in strengthening conservative positions. Thus, no matter what your political position, you can help reduce polarization in America by working to depolarize your own thinking through this recommended exercise.
